As an acting teacher, workshop leader, and trainer of professionals and young artists, Joe has taught at every level of education from middle & high school through university theatre programs, and in the business sector as a private coach in the performance of public speaking.  In the non-profit sector, Joe has created innovative and progressive education programs for young artists that have helped to bridge the gap between public education and actual career building in the performing arts for hundreds of young people.

University level teaching & Program Development

As Founding Artistic Director of Tricklock Company, professional theatre company in residence at the University of New Mexico, Joe has led ensemble development training for his company and many others based on his performance studies and years of touring and training across the US and Europe.  Joe developed the UNM Residency Program, funded by Governor Bill Richardson and the New Mexico Legislature, creating the first incubator and performance apprenticeship courses for the College of Fine Arts, and created the Master Workshop Series with international artists via his Revolutions International Theatre Festival at UNM. Joe has also led training with the UNM Department of Architecture in performance for non-actors, preparing graduate students for oral exams and presentations.  In 2006 Joe was honored to deliver the key-note address to the graduating class of the UNM College of Fine Arts.

For the Rubicon Theatre Company of California Joe served as founding producer for the company’s International Festival from 2007 through 2008, and developed the Rubicon Professional Apprentice Program leading all recruiting of university students nationwide, program development with international faculty, and directing students in an original production in culmination of their studies.   Also for the Rubicon Theatre, Joe helped to develop and taught in the Summer Acting Intensive in 2009, bringing artists from 14-30 years of age professional training in performance studies.

High School, Mid School, & teen specific education program development

Joe is the creator of The Manoa Project: Statewide Teen Playwriting Competition & Ensemble Apprenticeship Program, developed with Tricklock Company in partnership with The National Hispanic Cultural Center and Albuquerque Academy Independent School.  Now in its 6th season, this 8-week conservatory-style program develops young playwrights, trains and mentors actors, and tours the original theatre work of teens statewide in New Mexico.  This program is provided tuition free, completely funded by state and local grants, and is intended to provide a solid bridge for high school students seeking to create real careers in the performing arts and continue their training internationally and at the university level. Joe also created the High School Workshop Series for Tricklock in partnership with Intel and Public Service Company of New Mexico, bringing needed performing arts workshops to teachers in public schools suffering from arts funding cuts and over-crowded classrooms.

For Working Classroom, New Mexico’s leading arts education company for multi-ethnic urban artists,   Joe served as Assistant Director and dramaturge to Tony-Nominated Moises Kaufman (Laramie Project, 33 Variations) with his original performance Carmen.  The following year Joe continued his work with Working Classroom by taking over the helm of Carmen with Mr. Kaufman’s blessing, leading the students to a second triumphant run of the production.

And as a faculty member of the Bosque Independent School from 2004-2005, Joe taught drama to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, creating original performances year round, including staging full productions with each class at the culmination of the year.

Joe is a graduate of the University of New Mexico with a triple major in Theatre Arts, English/ Creative Writing, and Spanish.  Further training includes residencies with Leonardo Shapiro of New York's Shaliko Company, Gardzienice Theatre in Poland, and Double Edge Theatre of Massachusetts, including training intensives with Dell' Arte School of Physical Theatre of California and Daniel Stein, Ann Bogart and SITI Co., and solo performance creation study with Holly Hughes.  Joe is the recipient of New Mexico Business Weekly’s “Top-Forty-Under-40” arts professionals award in 2005, and has served as a consultant to the Albuquerque Dept. of Cultural Services in support of Mayor Martin Chavez’ transition team, and as a member of Albuquerque’s Film Advisory Board.  Joe is currently developing a new performance based on the life of Jackson Pollock with Moni Yakim of Juilliard in New York.
